Site cameras reimagined: documentation and AI analysis

Podcast on body cams and construction site cameras — cover image from the studio

Many people are familiar with construction site cameras – but very few know what they are truly capable of today. In the podcast, Dr Matthias Hagner explains to Exit mentor Oliver Pohl (https://exit-mentor.de/) why it is no longer simply about surveillance.

When people hear ‘construction site camera’, most think of theft protection and deterrence. Understandable – but that only tells half the story. At NetCo BauTV+, it’s about something else: documentation, transparency and intelligent analysis.

Documentation rather than surveillance

In the podcast, Matthias clears up a common misconception: “There are providers who set up security solutions for surveillance against burglary. We don’t do that. We do construction site documentation.”

Our cameras monitor construction progress – live and in the archive. They provide information for investors who want to see the status of their project. For marketing teams creating impressive time-lapse videos. For site managers who need to know whether the supplier has already been on site, what the weather was like, or whether the wall is up yet. It’s more of a smart webcam than a surveillance system.

Customers don’t want a camera – they want answers

This is where it gets interesting. In conversation, Matthias describes a shift we’re observing among our customers: demand is shifting from “Give me a picture” to “Give me information.”

When did the crane last move? Was anyone working yesterday afternoon? How far has the structural work progressed compared to last week? Such questions can only be answered using traditional camera footage if someone spends hours sifting through the material. With AI-powered analysis, this can be done faster and more reliably.

We are developing features that make exactly this possible: automatic construction diaries, incident reports and the ability to jump directly to specific moments in the archive. Not because AI is currently in vogue, but because our customers need this information.

An example: When the crane stands still

In the podcast, Matthias gives a clear example: A construction crane costs a considerable amount of money – per day. If it isn’t moving, something is wrong. Perhaps materials are missing, perhaps there is a delay in logistics, perhaps a subcontractor isn’t ready. Anyone who only notices this during their next site visit loses time and money. An intelligently analysing camera can automatically detect and report such downtime.

Data protection: GDPR-compliant thanks to AI

A topic that may seem surprising at first glance: data protection, in particular, has driven our use of AI. When the GDPR imposed stricter requirements on construction site cameras, we needed a solution to automatically blur people in the footage. Images should continue to show construction progress – but without individuals being identifiable.
Initially, we worked with an external solution, then developed our own AI-based pixelation. The result: our customers can publish, share and archive construction site images without breaching data protection regulations. AI was simply the most reliable way to solve this problem.

Looking ahead

In the coming years, construction site cameras will be more than just a documentation tool. They will become a data source for project management, quality assurance and forward-looking planning. The camera provides the images – AI turns them into information – and humans make the decisions. At NetCo, we take this triad seriously.
